Rashmikant Durlabhji Dies at 70 One of the most prominent colored gemstone and jewelry dealers in India, Rashmikant Durlabhji, died of natural causes on February 28 at a hospital in Jaipur. He was 70. Durlabhji’s father, Khailshankar, was a pioneer in the gemstone industry in Jaipur, building his family’s cutting operation with rough from gem mines he owned overseas. Rashmikant became a prominent member of the gem community, serving as the president of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council from 1983 to 1985. He was also a founding member of the International Colored Gemstone Association, and spent two terms as vice-president. Rashmikant Durlabhji was also a philanthropist. For more than 40 years he served as the secretary of the Santokbha Durlabhji Trust, which runs a 350-bed multidisciplinary hospital and training centers for postgraduate doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff. In 1998, he founded the Khailshankar Durlabhji Avedna Ashram, a hospice for terminally ill cancer patients. Durlabhji was survived by his wife, Sumedha, and two children. His son, Mehul, is also a prominent member of the jewelry industry, and will carry on the family business. Posted: March 1, 2007
